Community flies pink balloons in honor of teen killed by stray bullet

Just over a week after a teen was sentenced for the fatal shooting of Hailey Stephens, family and friends released pink balloons into the sky to honor her memory. The gathering took place in Casa Grande, Arizona, where they reflected on the life of the 17-year-old, who lost her life to a stray bullet at a house party almost a year ago.

The evening was filled with emotion as attendees wore shirts featuring Stephens’ photo, leaving heartfelt messages on the balloons, including “Miss you every day, rest easy” and “We love you, may you continue to shine bright.” Her friends remember her vibrant personality, particularly her infectious laugh.

“My favorite part about her was her laugh,” shared a friend who chose to remain unnamed. “It was such an infectious laugh.” Stephens was not just a beloved friend; she was also an active student at Casa Grande Union High School, engaging in cheerleading while maintaining strong academic standings.

“She was really into school, her athletics, cheer — I was on the cheer team with her,” said fellow cheerleader Kylie Mendoza, highlighting Stephens’ dedication and humor.

As the memorial took place, new developments in the legal case emerged. A 14-year-old has received a juvenile court sentence and will be under the custody of the Arizona Juvenile Corrections Department until the age of 18 for his role in the incident.

The tragic shooting unfolded last November during a fight at the house party where Stephens was an innocent bystander. Her mother, Vanessa Stephens, expressed her sorrow, stating, “I couldn’t ever have imagined what happened happening. Hailey was a really beautiful, bright, smart girl.” She believes the responsible party should have received a life sentence, a sentiment complicated by state laws.

Holding back tears, Vanessa reflected on the senseless loss, saying, “Being in the system that he’s in is horrible — we lost two people.” She remains hopeful saying, “My hope would be that he comes out and becomes a beautiful person and has a beautiful family.”

In the wake of her daughter’s death, Vanessa emphasized the importance of cherishing family time. “Spend more time with your family,” she urged. “We spent lots of time with Hailey, but that all can be taken away.” To honor Hailey’s legacy, the family has established the Hailey Lynn Stephens Foundation to provide scholarships for students pursuing higher education.
