Climate Activists Post Bail After Storming Phoenix Trump Campaign Office
By Staff Reporter |
Climate activists are mobilizing financial support to secure the release of individuals arrested for trespassing at a Phoenix campaign office for Donald Trump on Monday. The group, associated with the Sunrise Movement, aims to promote significant change in climate policy through initiatives like the Green New Deal. Among those arrested were two young activists: 20-year-old Nate Scofield and 21-year-old Riya Kumar.
Scofield, a student at the University of North Carolina and substitute teacher, organizes with the Sunrise Movement. Similarly, Kumar, studying at the University of Idaho, took to social media to request bail money following her arrest. In her post, she stated, “I was arrested at a Trump office because I am fighting for a just and livable future for all beings.”
Ashton Dolce, a 17-year-old founder of the Sunrise Movement’s Phoenix hub and a member of FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council, helped coordinate the protest. Many young attendees voiced concerns over Trump and his policies, particularly his ties to the fossil fuel industry.
As of the latest update, nearly 200 supporters have contributed over $7,000 towards a $10,000 fundraising goal, organized by Simren Kaur, a California-based activist. The fundraising page emphasizes the perceived dangers posed by a Trump presidency and the motivations behind the activists’ actions, stating, “Trump is radical and extreme right-wing Republicans have detailed plans to strip our rights away.” The message calls for urgent climate action and social justice.
The Green New Deal seeks a transformative approach to U.S. energy policy, proposing a complete shift to renewable energy sources and the creation of green jobs. This ambitious framework aims not just at addressing climate change but also at ensuring economic equity.
