Boo or Beware? Kids Encounter Krampus in the Meadows This Friday the 13th
On December 13, 2024, Shaun Martin took on the role of Krampus, captivating visitors at his home in Maricopa Meadows. He embraced the spirit of the season by handing out candy canes while donning a fully decked-out Krampus costume. This event followed his previous victory in the Mysterious Mansion Mayhem Halloween house decorating contest.
Krampus, a legendary figure from Central European folklore, serves as a dark counterpart to St. Nicholas. Traditionally, he punishes misbehaving children during the Christmas season. “He would put them in a sack and whip them with birch sticks,” quipped Martin, “but you know, we’re not going to get that extreme tonight.”
Instead of instilling fear, Martin created a festive atmosphere. Families posed for photos, and Martin’s interactive wheel evaluated whether children had been nice or naughty. Among those who visited was Alterra resident Samantha Peterson, who appreciated the cultural exposure for her children.
“I’m trying to keep my kids open-minded,” Peterson remarked. “I think it teaches a whole different tradition that a lot of people don’t know about.” She expressed relief that her son, Tristin, who has autism, felt comfortable enough to engage with Krampus, even accepting a candy cane.
Martin plans to continue his Krampus appearances for several more nights this holiday season, though specific dates were undetermined at the time of reporting. His home is set to feature prominently in the upcoming Ride 347 Holiday Homes on Parade tours.
For those unable to meet him this year, Martin assures that Krampus will return next Krampusnacht with an even more impressive look.
