Bela Karolyi, Controversial Gymnastics Coach Behind Nadia and Mary Lou, Passes Away at 82

Legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi, renowned for shaping champion athletes and elevating U.S. gymnastics on the world stage, has passed away at 82. His death was confirmed by USA Gymnastics, though no cause has been disclosed.

Karolyi, alongside his wife Martha, was instrumental in training notable Olympic gold medalists, including Nadia Comaneci, who won gold at just 14 during the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and Mary Lou Retton, who captured the all-around title in 1984. Comaneci shared her heartfelt tribute on Instagram, recognizing the substantial impact Karolyi had on her life.

The couple defected to the U.S. in 1981 and became pivotal figures in American gymnastics, fostering a new era of success. Their coaching legacy included guiding Kerri Strug to a memorable performance in the 1996 Games, where Strug’s vault secured team gold, despite her injury. This moment solidified Karolyi’s status as a nurturing, yet demanding coach.

In 1999, Karolyi briefly took on the role of national team coordinator for USA Gymnastics women’s elite program, implementing a centralized training system that transformed American athletes into frontrunners in the sport.
