Baseball Returns: Az’s Cactus League Kicks Off 78th Spring Training with Exciting New Twists

Early Wednesday morning, die-hard baseball fans gathered outside Camelback Ranch, eager for the return of spring training. Despite the hour—3:30 a.m.—enthusiasts braved the chilly air, with over 200 lining up by 9 a.m. to see the Los Angeles Dodgers stretch and practice.
Spring training has officially kicked off in the Valley, marking a celebration for fans eager to watch their favorite teams after a long offseason. This year, the Cactus League begins its 78th season, hosting 15 teams across 10 stadiums throughout Arizona. As the month progresses, baseball stadiums from Glendale to Mesa will be buzzing with thousands of fans from around the globe.
During its annual media preview day, the Cactus League highlighted its significant role in Arizona’s tourism economy. Governor Katie Hobbs has even proclaimed February 12 as “Cactus League Welcome Day,” underscoring the event’s importance. “This proclamation means the world to us,” said Bridget Binsbacher, executive director of the Cactus League.
Last spring marked a record increase in attendance, with an average of over 7,500 fans per game. Some events witnessed attendance soar beyond 11,000, illustrating the strong draw of spring training games. The proximity of stadiums, all within a 45-minute drive of each other, enhances the experience for fans, making game-hopping a popular choice.
Binbsbacher emphasized the unique experience spring training offers. “You can get up close and personal with your favorite players,” she said. This season, fans will also see the introduction of the automated ball-strike system in five stadiums. Although used in the minor leagues, this marks its debut in the Cactus League, with plans for a broader implementation by 2026.
As Major League Baseball introduces a pitch clock, officials are optimistic about maintaining fan interest amid evolving rules. The Cactus League has become a testing ground for new regulations, which could enhance the pace of play and overall viewing experience.
While Florida also hosts spring training games, Arizona outperforms its counterpart in attendance, attracting a higher percentage of non-local visitors. Last season, approximately 60% of the 1.6 million fans came from outside the state. This data reflects the Cactus League’s significant impact on the local economy.
The season officially kicks off on February 20 at Camelback Ranch, where the Los Angeles Dodgers will face off against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers, reigning World Series Champions, are set to open the regular season in Tokyo on March 18.
