Avondale Family’s Heartwarming Adoption of 5-Year-Old Girl on National Adoption Day
On National Adoption Day, a remarkable celebration unfolded as five-year-old Estella officially joined the Lugo family in Avondale, marking a significant milestone in their generational narrative of adoption.
In Maricopa County, the day saw over 50 children find their forever homes, with a palpable sense of joy permeating the courtroom where Estella’s adoption took place. Her adoptive mother, Estella Lugo, expressed deep emotional connections, reflecting on how Estella had been part of the family since she was 18 months old.
“(It’s) finalization for her,” Lugo remarked. “Security for her… family… love… forever.” Her emotions mirrored those of her mother, Estella Gomez-Taylor, who highlighted the family’s history with adoption, stating, “My daughter has adopted my sister Angela’s great-granddaughter.”
The Lugo family’s ties to adoption stretch back decades. “Yes, yes… my mother adopted my brother and my two sisters,” Lugo shared, indicating a proud legacy. Her own journey into the world of child welfare began years ago as she worked for child protective services, giving her a broader perspective on fostering and adoption.
Retired judge Maurice Portley, who facilitated the adoption ceremony, captured the essence of the day as he spoke about community unity. “Creating family… keeping family… it was a big group, with a lot of love and joy,” he said. This positive atmosphere coincided with the spirit of gratitude felt by both adopters and adopted children.
For Estella, this was just the beginning. With dreams of becoming a nurse, she stands at the threshold of new opportunities. “I want to be a doctor… I mean a nurse,” she clarified, embodying hope and ambition.
As the day concluded, families celebrated not just new beginnings but the enduring bonds of love and security that adoption brings. The formal court proceedings were followed by an awards ceremony celebrating the efforts of everyone involved, underscoring the day’s significance in fostering community spirit.
