Arizonans react to Biden bowing out, possible Harris run

President Joe Biden announced he will no longer seek reelection in November and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Here’s how Arizonans are reacting.

PHOENIX — President Joe Biden announced Sunday morning that he is no longer seeking reelection in the 2024 Presidential race. This comes after mounting pressure from elected officials and advisors urging him to bow out.

Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs called Biden “the embodiment of a public servant” and commended his commitment to the American people. “A healthy democracy requires that Americans engage in thorough debate and deliberation to choose our nominee, and I am confident that our democracy will be strengthened because of it,” Hobbs said.

Conor O’Callaghan, a Democratic candidate for Congress, expressed unwavering support for Biden. “President Biden has served this country with dignity and grace,” he stated, adding that history will remember Biden fondly for his leadership during turbulent times.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego praised Biden for his accomplishments and their positive impact on Arizona. “President Biden has achieved so much, made so many lives better — especially here in Arizona,” she said.

Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake took a different stance, suggesting Biden’s withdrawal shows he’s not fit to run the country. “If Joe Biden is not up for running for office, he’s not up for running the country,” she commented.

Arizona Representative Analise Ortiz expressed readiness to support a new Democratic nominee and emphasized the importance of defeating Trump in November. “Much is on the line. Let’s get to work,” Ortiz urged.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes reassured the public regarding the security of the upcoming general election following Biden’s announcement. Fontes highlighted the integrity of Arizona’s election process in his statement.

Arizona House Democrats hailed Biden as a “patriot and a statesman” and emphasized the gains Arizona has seen under his leadership in manufacturing, high-tech job creation, and infrastructure investment. They expressed gratitude for his commitment to American families.

Support for Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden’s endorsed candidate, has been strong among Arizona’s prominent figures. Senator Mark Kelly voiced his full confidence in Harris’s ability to defeat Donald Trump and lead the country. “She has my support for the nomination,” Kelly declared.

Gabby Giffords, former Congresswoman and Kelly’s wife, also endorsed Harris, calling her candidacy historic. “Her strong, steadfast leadership will save lives,” Giffords affirmed.
