Many energy consumers in Arizona are poised to benefit from a decrease in their gas bills just in time for the holiday season.

Southwest Gas Corporation recently notified the Arizona Corporation Commission of a rate reduction set to take effect from October 1, 2024. The announcement, made by Regulator Manager Doran A. Miller, indicates that the Gas Cost Balancing Account rate will drop from $0.30911 to $0.00 per therm. This change is expected to save the average single-family residential customer roughly $7 per month.

Republican Commissioner Kevin Thompson welcomed the news, stating, “Any significant savings for the ratepayer should be welcomed, particularly in this economy.” He emphasized that the monthly surcharge for natural gas fuel is routinely scrutinized to ensure consumers are charged the actual cost, preventing utilities from overcharging.

Thompson further noted that as market volatility decreases and natural gas prices drop, many customers will notice a substantial decrease in their monthly bills starting in October.

A recent report from WalletHub revealed that Arizona boasts the second-lowest energy costs among the 50 states, with average bills around $400. Several factors contribute to this status, according to the Corporation Commission. These include a diverse range of energy generation sources, self-sufficiency in power supply, and proactive maintenance practices to ensure grid reliability, especially during peak demand in summer.

Commissioner Lea Marquez Peterson commented on the WalletHub report, stating, “The data released in the report reflects the priorities of our Commission – reliable energy at the most affordable rates.” She expressed pride in the diligent efforts to provide valuable services and pricing to the state’s ratepayers.
