Did Katie Ledecky win the 800-meter freestyle?

Katie Ledecky has etched her name deeper into the annals of Olympic history. Her latest achievement in the women’s 800-meter freestyle places her in elite company.

In Paris, Ledecky clinched her fourth consecutive gold medal in the event. This accomplishment aligns her with American swimming legend Michael Phelps, making them the only swimmers — regardless of gender — to win four gold medals in a single event. Both achievements bring immense pride to the American sporting community.

Initially, Ledecky was the overwhelming favorite. She already holds the world record in the 800-meter freestyle at 8:04.79. Despite this, earlier this year she faced a rare defeat at a regional meet in Florida, losing to Canadian athlete Summer McIntosh, which marked her first loss in the event in 13 years. Notably, McIntosh did not compete in the 800-meter event in Paris.

Ledecky’s journey with this event began at the 2012 London Olympics, where she first captured gold. Michael Phelps, on the other hand, won his four 200 individual medley titles across four Olympiads.

“I try not to really think about it,” Ledecky stated on Friday. “Just taking it one event at a time and I know I have challenges in each of my events.” She added, “When it’s all said and done, I’ll enjoy it.”
