Arizona Humane Society Drops Adoption Fees for Big-Hearted Big Dogs
PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society has announced a waiver on adoption fees for all large-breed dogs weighing 50 pounds and above.
This initiative aims to find loving homes for these animals and manage the overcrowding at Arizona Humane Society shelters. The state’s primary animal rescue agency is struggling with capacity issues, where large-breed dogs have the longest shelter stays compared to smaller breeds. Currently, over thirty adoptable large-breed dogs await new homes, with a dozen having been at the shelter for more than a month.
Recent rescues include canines involved in a hoarding situation. Among them are Ernie, a tan and black Sharpei mix, and Fester, a beige Sharpei mix. Both dogs have undergone treatment at the shelter’s trauma hospital and are now ready for adoption, having waited for nearly two months for permanent homes.
This year, AHS has responded to over 10,000 animal assistance requests from Valley residents. They are urging those who can adopt to come forward and help.
