Roosevelt School Board Makes Controversial Decision to Shutter 5 Schools
Roosevelt School District Closes Five Schools Amid Budget Deficit
The Roosevelt School District governing board has made the difficult decision to close five schools following a 4-1 vote. Superintendent Dr. Dani Portillo emphasized the pressing need for this action due to a projected $5 million budget deficit, deeming it essential for the district’s sustainability.
Board President Shellie Jackson, along with members Dr. Ashley Hodge, Alexis Aguirre, and Dr. Megan Frankiewicz, supported the closures. Jackson reflected on the personal impact of the decision, revealing that one of the affected schools holds significance for her family. “Making the decision to close, for me is very personal,” she stated.
In contrast, veteran board member Lawrence Robinson expressed strong dissatisfaction with the outcome. He argued that viable financial alternatives had not been adequately explored. Robinson highlighted the potential of investing in affordable housing, a strategy adopted by other districts facing similar challenges. His views resonated with many community members who attended the meetings.
The following schools will be shuttered at the end of the 2024-25 academic year:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary
- C.J. Jorgensen Academy
- John R. Davis Elementary
- V.H. Lassen Academy
- Maxine O. Bush Elementary
